Sweet and Sour Crab


Serving:  2 - 4 person

Preparation and cooking time: 1 hour


2 pieces Mud Crabs (Cut and Cleaned)​
1/2 bottle of Chili Sauce

1/4 bottle of Tomato sauce

1/4 cup Plum sauce

1 Egg (whisked)

4 tbsp Oil

2 cups of Water


4-6 pieces Dried Chili or Chili Padi (depending on how spicy you want it)

50g of Shallots roughly 12 pieces

30g roughly half bulb of Garlic

30g of Ginger roughly 3 thumb size





Thickening Solution (Optional)

2 tbsp Cornstarch 

2 tbsp Water


Step 1: Prep: Soak dried chili. Peel shallots, garlic and ginger. 

Step 2: Dice or Blend Spices: Dice or blend shallot, garlic, ginger and dried chili or chili padi.

Step 3: Fry Spices: Heat 4 tbsp of oil until it sizzles. Add spices and fry until fragrant.

Step 4: Cook Sauce: Add chili sauce, tomato sauce and plum sauce. Mix well. Then add water.

Step 5: Cook Crab: Place crab body and claws. Arrange shells on top. Cover and cook until the crab turn red (15 minutes).

Step 6: Season Sauce: Season sauce with salt, sugar and lime juice. Add cornstarch solution to thicken the sauce otherwise add eggs and mix sauce in a circular direction.


Step 7: Enjoy! 


Tips: Toast some white bread or fried Chinese buns (mantou/馒头) to dip with the sauce.
